Introduction
Australia is the world's driest continent (with an average
of 469mm per year compared to the world average of 746mm) yet
Australia's per capita water use is the third highest in the world,
after the US and Canada - an average Australian household uses
300,000 litres of water a year. Of that, only about 5% is used
for drinking or cooking. All of the rest, except water from toilets,
is called greywater and can be recycled, most simply for use in
the garden. Sydney Water estimates that an average household (3.5
people) produces 586 litres of wastewater each day, most of which
is greywater that could be recycled. Making matters worse is the
fact that Australia has one of the lowest levels of water recycling
in the developed world: where European cities such as London recycle
about 80% of their water, Australian cities only recycle a tiny
proportion.
Some steps
to cut your domestic water use...
1. Fit a rainwater tank to collect rainwater from your roof.
2. Choose water-efficient appliances, showers and taps
3. Install dry composting, or at least dual-flush, toilets toilets.
4. Install a greywater system to reuse washing machine water.
5. Create a waterless garden with mulch and native plants.
6. Dry-wash your car or wash with a sponge.
7. Fit a cover over your swimming pool.
