EcoNappies
The average Australian baby goes through more than 6000 nappy changes before they are toilet trained. Disposable nappies contain plastics and chemicals that can take up to 400 years to break down in landfill. Cloth nappies are better for the environment - and cheaper if you wash them yourself. (Using a nappy wash service is easier but will probably work out a similar price to disposables).

Organic, unbleached cotton cloth nappies are best of all - and also mean less chemicals in contact with your baby's skin. Wash them using eco-friendly laundry detergents. Some eco-friendly nappy systems use a biodegradeable disposable inner lining that can be flushed down the toilet, inside a fitted cloth nappy outer.

A recent development is "eco-disposables", such as EcoBots, Moltex, Bambo Nature or Tushies, which contain less chemicals and/or plastics than normal disposables and break down faster. While not as environmentally friendly as cloth nappies, they are better than other disposables. Some can be partially composted. Dispose of nappies in biodegradeable nappy bags, not normal plastic bags, to allow them to decompose further/more quickly.
